Admissions PolicySts. Leo-Seton Catholic School (SLS) admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in administration of its admission policies, educational policies, tuition assistance programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.
First Priority:1. Children of faculty and staff at SLS
2. Siblings of in-house families
(Note: Admission priority can be affected by the level of active participation in the Catholic church parish)
- Parishioners of owner parishes (St. Elizabeth Seton
and St. Leo the Great)
- Parishioners of other Catholic parishes who are
alumni of SLS
- Parishioners of other Catholic parishes who are not alumni of SLS
1. First Entry/Transfer Students
Applications are available to potential new students beginning in January. Applications may be picked up at the Sts. Leo-Seton Catholic School office, mailed, or emailed upon request. As complete application packets are received, they are placed in order of date received. After in-house enrollment is complete, all complete application packets for new students will be reviewed according to priority policy. Students entering in grades 1st through 8th will be interviewed by an administrator pending acceptance.
Application Required Information
The following items must be included in all new student application packets:
- SLS application forms (completely filled out)
- Current & past report card
Standardized test scores
Discipline report signed by school employee
Social Security Card
“We are Family” is the motto of SLS. The Spirit of Family strongly influences the function and operation of the school including registration policies and procedures. Therefore the following groups of applicants are registered before other applications are accepted:
1. Students currently attending SLS Pre-K through 8th grade.
2. Siblings of those attending SLS and children of faculty and administrators.
Importance of Submitting Application
Naturally, those who do not apply cannot be accepted. Since there are no fees for submitting one’s application, it is to a family’s advantage to submit their application. In some years there are fewer applicants than others in which case all early applicants are accepted, even though at other times there may be a waiting list. The following guidelines are meant as a guide for the SLS Administration in determining the priority of applications. These guidelines should not discourage interested persons from submitting their application.
Application Time Table
The following is the usual timetable for processing applications:
Application forms are made available at the beginning of January for the following school year.
Applications are normally due at the end of January.
The decision of acceptance or non-acceptance is usually made by mid-February.
Based on the priority determined, a waiting list of applicants is maintained until the following January when the process begins anew.
St. Leo the Great and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish jointly own SLS. The bishop appoints a pastor to serve as Chancellor of the school, though both pastors serve as members of the faculty celebrating Mass, confessions and teaching classes. Priority is given to registered, participating members of these two parishes.
Participating, Involved Catholics
SLS exists to develop the faith life of its students. It is a Catholic school, not a private school. It is a parochial school associated with two specific parishes, not an independent school. Our school is an extension of the Church parishes to which its members belong, especially St. Leo the Great and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. Though the faith of the children is nurtured by belonging to the SLS Family, the faith life of the school family should be lived in their respective church parishes.
Therefore, our registration policies give preference to families that can substantiate their active participation in the church parish. Registration procedures will give preference to those families that have demonstrated consistent attendance and participation in their church parish. The application forms require the signature of the applicant’s pastor verifying the family’s level of participation and length of membership.
Establishing a Record of Participation
When seeking your pastor’s signature the following should be kept in mind:
The parents of children seeking admission in our school should be formally registered in their church parish. Being baptized in a church, living near the church, or attending a church does not necessarily constitute being registered. Do not presume registration; check to be sure. The use of church support envelopes and/or checks on a regular basis is recommended as a means of establishing a record of attendance and participation in your church parish. The amount contributed will have no bearing on the level of priority. Frequency of contributions is more significant. A pastor cannot be expected to personally know or recognize each parishioner seeking his signature, thus it is important to establish a record of participation.
Some situations may warrant special consideration in determining their level of priority. These will be considered on an individual basis. If parents feel their situation warrants special consideration, they should do the following when submitting their application:
- Address a letter to the principal explaining their special circumstances.
- Submit any documentation that substantiates their claim. (i.e. Letter of recommendation from their former pastor)
